New America Media (NAM), the nation's largest coalition of ethnic media outlets, will host a critical gathering of the ethnic media June 4-5, 2009 in Atlanta.

The two-day NAM EXPO & Awards will feature opportunities for leaders and supporters of the ethnic media to chart a course of survival for these vital media outlets.  The agenda will include the unveiling of a partnership with a government agency that will utilize NAM's state-of-the-art emergency communication system to convey alerts to ethnic communities. This historic relationship will affirm ethnic media outlets as trusted leaders in delivering critical information to their communities. We will discuss how NAM's technology can be leveraged to forge more partnerships with government agencies, as well as non-profit and private entities, while creating new sources of revenue for the ethnic media.

Moreover, the event will include the NAM National Ethnic Media Awards, a celebration of excellence in ethnic and hyperlocal journalism, as well as a discussion of NAM's groundbreaking poll of documented and undocumented immigrant women, a series of professional development seminars outlining best practices for working with the ethnic media sector, the release of the latest poll data on ethnic media usage, myriad opportunities for professional networking, and more.

As the news industry weathers the current economic crisis, the NAM EXPO & Awards will allow media outlets to collaborate on survival strategies.  By working to expand the role of the ethnic media, we will fortify their position as trusted sources of community news and information, and as indispensable links between the government and the governed.

"The key to successful governance is communicating with voters of many colors and socioeconomic backgrounds, and the ethnic media offers a critical link between government and these constituents," said NAM Executive Director Sandy Close.  "With the EXPO & Awards, we're trying to leverage that position to give even more ethnic news practitioners and readers access to decision-makers."

Major sponsors of NAM's EXPO & Awards include the University of Georgia's Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, the 2010 U.S. Census, Comcast, Church's Chicken, and AARP.  Organizations interested in providing sponsorship in the form of cash or in-kind donations should visit the website listed below or contact Lisa Lavaysse, llava@newamericamedia.org, for information about reciprocal advertising space in NAM's collateral surrounding the event.

The NAM National Ethnic Media EXPO & Awards promises to be perhaps the single best networking opportunity of the year for journalists, activists, academics, and advertisers working with and within the ethnic media sector.

"Collaboration is the order of the day for journalism," added Ms. Close.  "In these tough times, our EXPO will be an opportunity for all of us in the ethnic media to band together in order to build a stronger sector."
